Brief History of LIberty Chapel Baptist Church

In 1775, a small band of believers met at Maynard’s Corner and organized a Baptist Church. In letters, it is referred to as Maynard’s Liberty Chapel. In 1836, it is called the Harmony Church of Christ, Liberty Chapel Meeting House. Finally, in 1840, under the leadership of Elder Gabriel Walker, the church was renamed the Baptist Church at Liberty Chapel and underwent an extensive building program. In 1877 the church formed the Ladies Missionary Society; this was over ten years before the formation of the state Ladies Missionary Union.

As the membership continued to grow, the congregation decided that its 115-year-old building was “unfit for public worship.” And a new building was started, this was a brave undertaking since the country was in the midst of a severe economic depression and there were only 25 money contributing members in the congregation. However, after much sacrifice, the new building was completed in 1892, and the last payment was made in 1893 at its dedication. Preaching his last sermon at that dedication was Brother Thomas Johnson, who had served as the Pastor since 1853. He continued to serve as Pastor until 1894, but was no longer strong enough to preach.

The building dedicated in 1893, is still our main building of worship today; however, it has undergone numerous changes. Sunday School rooms were added in 1938, the interior completely remodeled between 1948 and 1950, a basement completed in 1956, a fellowship building with additional classrooms, kitchen and restrooms added in 1982, and another complete interior makeover with additional space and a vestibule was completed in 1998. Clearly, our church has been blessed by God with a long history of making disciples for Jesus Christ.
